Signs Of Common Insects
Beetles:
Beetles come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Some are long and slender where others have an oval and round shape to them. The largest species can be over six inches long while the smallest species can be less than a millimeter long. Many species will accidentally be brought into the home along with infested products such as stored grains, packaged foods, or garden plants. Beetles are a nuisance because of their ability to damage stored food and property. The pests can even damage clothes, crops, decor, and furniture around your home. When beetles become a problem, give Chem-Wise a call to provide you with a free phone quote.
Boxelder Bugs:
Boxelder Bugs are about 1/2 inch long, bright red or black with reddish lines on their back. Boxelder Bugs can be found on Boxelder or Maple Trees, and they can cause problems for homeowners in certain months of the year. Near their host tree, Boxelder Bugs will huddle together on warm surfaces (rocks, house siding, etc.) This can cause a problem when they form large groups on your home looking to enter. Once they have found an entry, they will stay inactive behind the siding and walls. Once they enter, they become active once heating in your home is turned on. The Boxelder Bugs will think that winter is over and enter your home looking for food and water. These bugs can leave behind excrement that can stain carpets and other furniture. Although these bugs are harmless, they can be a major nuisance that are worth getting rid of.
Centipedes:
Contrary to what their name suggests, centipedes are inch-long insects with a total of 30 legs. They have a long flat body with black and white bands, and long antennae. Although centipedes are not necessarily dangerous, they are venomous predators, and can bite. The bite of a centipede is virtually harmless, but it is important to remain cautious if you have children or pets in your home, or if someone has an insect bite allergy. Centipedes will typically feed on other pests as their primary food source. If you notice a centipede infestation, this could mean there is a secondary infestation of another pest. Having centipedes exterminated, and your home evaluated, will protect you and your family, grant you peace of mind, and may even uncover a more serious pest infestation that needs to be taken care of.
Clover Mites:
Clover mites are little red arachnids which are common in the Chicagoland area. They are small – about the size of a poppy seed – and thrive around homes and other warm structures. Clover mites are plant eaters. They can live on many types of plants, trees, mold or algae. Clover mites are a problem for several reasons. Since they are able to live in wall voids, under siding and generally out of view, many times their activity will go unnoticed for several years. During this time they will be reproducing and growing the population. Clover mites enter your home near window areas, but can eventually overrun your entire home. Clover mites are a nuisance, and can leave an unsightly red stain if they are crushed on curtains or carpets.
Crickets:
Crickets are a nuisance for two main reasons, their chirping and the damage they can cause to your personal items. Crickets will often eat fabric, which will damage clothing as well as furniture. In addition to the damage caused from feeding, the noise generated by crickets can be very bothersome. Male crickets chirp when they are looking for a mate and this chirping can be louder than you would expect. This can become very annoying, especially at night when you are trying to sleep. To safeguard your personal items and sleep soundly, taking care of your cricket problem today will be a huge relief.
Earwigs:
Earwigs are easily recognizable by their pincers (forceps harmless to humans) at the ends of their abdomen. They are dark reddish-brown, with light brown legs, and are about 5/8 inch long. Some earwigs release a foul odor to defend themselves, which can be unpleasant if they make their way into a home. Earwigs may be present, although invisible during the day, around foundations, in mulch, under stones, boards, etc. Removing earwig habitats is very important to the control of earwigs. Most earwig treatment can be done outside with application around the building foundation, flower beds, mulch areas and turf within a couple of yards of the building, as well as in the crawl space and basement areas of the home.
Millipedes:
Millipedes are oval, 1-1/2 inches long, and segmented with many legs. Millipedes are rarely destructive to properties, but they are unsightly, can release unpleasant odors, and are often unwelcome visitors to homes and businesses. Millipedes usually live outside in damp areas under mulch, leaves, compost piles, flowerpots, boards or stones. Excess rain will drive them indoors in search of shelter and drought will drive them indoors in search of water. Once in your home, they tend to gravitate toward damp areas such as laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces. If you have a heavy millipede infestation in your house, there are likely millipedes breeding in your lawn or under mulch, leaf litter or debris near your foundation. A pest professional from Chem-Wise can easily take care of any millipede infestation you may have.
Pill Bugs:
Pill bugs are sometimes referred to as rollie pollies. This name is due to the fact that the pill bug can roll up into a tight ball when disturbed. Pill bugs are between 1/4 - 5/8 inches long and have seven pairs of legs and 2 pairs of antennae. Pill bugs thrive only in areas of high moisture, and tend to remain hidden under objects during the day. Around buildings they are common under mulch, compost, boards, stones, flowerpots, and other items resting on damp ground. Another frequent hiding place is behind the grass edge adjoining sidewalks and foundations. Frequent sightings of these pests indoors usually means that there are large numbers breeding on the outside, close to the foundation. If you have a pill bug problem contact us today!
Silverfish:
Silverfish get their name from the insect’s silvery, metallic appearance and fish-like shape and movements. Adult silverfish have a body length of about 1/2 - 3/4 inches, not including the tail. Silverfish generally live in damp and dark spaces and are usually brought into the home unwittingly. A female Silverfish can lay up to 100 eggs in her lifetime and up to 60 eggs at once. These insects can become a huge nuisance because their diet leads them to eat many household products. They can end up eating and destroying carpet, clothing, glue (found in books), hair, cotton, and paper. Silverfish are unique because they can last up to a year or more without eating if there is water available. This means the problem won’t go away on its own. If you have a silverfish infestation, it’s important to have them removed before they cause major damage.
Stink Bugs:
Stink Bugs are typically large, oval shaped insects about a 1/2 inch in length. The stink bug is usually most devastating to areas that have large agricultural industries but can be a major nuisance if they’ve invaded your home. They will typically enter the home in the fall and remain there throughout the winter. Stink bugs have an uncanny ability to slip into homes through torn screens and door cracks thanks to their flat body shape. When Stink bugs invade a home, it is generally in large numbers and it can often be in the thousands. The most notable characteristic of the stink bug is its pungent odor that is released when it feels threatened or senses danger. Exterminating Stink bugs will keep your home pest and odor free.
Why Treat Common Insects
Insect infestations can cause several types of problems for your home, property, family and pets. While most common insects are relatively harmless, they can create several types of inconveniences. Several common insects are known to eat cloth items and/or leave stains, causing damage to clothing, furniture, linens, curtains, and carpets. Others can contaminate stored food. Some of these insects release unpleasant odors, which can be uncomfortable to you, your family & friends, or if you are a business owner, your customers and employees. Others create a noise nuisance, disturbing a peaceful night’s sleep. Small common insects are often food sources for larger pests and can cause additional pests to enter your home. It is important to seek professional help to safely eliminate these types of household pests.
